Holland & Barrett International is one of the world’s leading health and wellness retailers and the largest in Europe supplying its customers with a wide range of vitamins, minerals, health supplements, specialist foods and natural beauty products.

THE PROJECT

Ideating, designing and testing of a new H&B health app from start to launch.

I joined the Diagnostics Product team within Wellness future to help launch a new H&B product from scratch. From competitor and market research to brand name ideation, UX and UI I was involve in the very beginning of the creation of Better Wellness.

The cross functional team was originally made up of a Head of Product, a Product Manager, a Tech lead, back and front end developers (as well as multiple stakeholders) and grew significantly over time. I was the sole designer as a Senior Product Designer in the first few months and was joined by a Junior Designer later. We worked in parallel with a branding agency to build Better Wellness identity.


IDEATION, BRAINSTORMS & Design Jams

As a Senior Product Designer, I had the opportunity to facilitate regular workshops for the product team in order to ideate, organise our thoughts and set goals/priorities. This included Brainstorm / Ideation Sessions and Design Jams.

User testing and analysis

As we created new concepts and features, testing was an important part of my role. I ran bi-weekly user testing sessions through Userzoom to quickly test new features and the evolution of our app. This was followed by an analysis of each test to share with different teams within H&B and to help us iterate and pivot. I also worked with the H&B research team on more in-depth tests.

dESIGN SYSTEM

Building from H&B app design system while integrating and building new Better Wellness elements from a bespoke colour palette to new components, icons and illustrations.

 

BETTER WELLNESS APP

Onboarding flow - Gamifying the onboarding experience with a Tinder swipe style interaction. Personalisation through data collection from the start.

Core flow - Homepage and results pages. Displaying complex data in a digestible format for users through clear results cards, colour coding & icons, biomarkers dropdown and graphs.

Core flow - Tests and Experts. Creating a smooth purchasing and registering experience for users. Allowing them to book a quick 15min call with an expert after receiving their results.


FEEDBACK

Joy managed to design and launch, from scratch, an incredibly complex product for Holland & Barrett which involved all sorts of healthcare risks and mitigations, as well as dealing with supply chain stuff and how to translate real-life health reports onto a relatable app.
Holland & Barrett’s new at-home diagnostics proposition would not be where it is today without her.
